We were honoured to host our annual Devoted Citizen Lecture, an inspiring evening that celebrated the power of active citizenship. Our keynote speaker, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, delivered a powerful message on what it truly means to be an active citizen in South Africa.

Some of the key takeaways from her address included:

  • “We have serious challenges — and pretending they don’t exist won’t make them go away.”

  • “It doesn’t take much to be a devoted citizen; it only takes love beyond self.”

  • “Active citizenship is refusing to be an observer in your own country.”

  • “Our communities are not short of commentary — they are short of commitment.”

The evening was also a celebration of ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things. We recognised individuals whose passion, courage, and service are making a real difference in their communities:

🏆 Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng – Awarded for being a Devoted Citizen

🏆 Dr. De WittHealth & Wellness Leadership Award

🏆 Dr. MakotiHealth & Wellness Leadership Award

🏆 Mr. MlungisiCommunity Leadership Award for his tireless efforts in helping his

Mpumalanga community gain access to water

🏆 Mr. Johannes MosehlaLeadership Award for breaking the record as the oldest person

(82 years old) to finish the Comrades Marathon

🏆 Rev. SC Mathebula – Honoured as a Community Builder and Devoted Citizen

The night served as a reminder that we all have a role to play — no matter how big or small — in shaping a better future for our country. Here's to building communities through love, action, and devotion.
